Types of Interpreting
Different types of events may require different interpreting services. The main types of interpreting are as follows:
- Consecutive Interpreting (Sequential Interpreting)
We primarily recommend consecutive interpreting for meetings and presentations with smaller audiences. The speaker pauses after every few sentences or at the end of each complete unit of thought, allowing the interpreter to convey what has been said from memory or with the aid of notes.
- Conference Interpreting (Simultaneous Interpreting)
This type of interpreting is typically required at conferences, workshops and other events with larger audiences. The original speech and its interpretation take place simultaneously, with the interpreter working in an interpreting booth while participants listen through headsets. This type of interpreting always requires technical equipment, including an interpreting booth, microphone and headphones. For longer events, at least two interpreters are required, taking turns every 15–20 minutes.
- Whispered Interpreting (Chuchotage)
Whispered interpreting likewise involves interpreting simultaneously, as in conference interpreting. The key difference is that the interpreter sits or stands beside the client and discreetly interprets what is being said. This can be a suitable solution when only one or two participants at an event require interpreting. For larger groups, the nature of this interpreting method means that additional interpreters are needed.
- Escort Interpreting
Escort interpreting may combine elements of the three interpreting methods described above. It is generally used for appointments with public authorities, medical appointments and factory visits. The interpreter accompanies the client to different locations and provides interpreting services according to the circumstances.
